System Overview
\n\nThe Kali Audio IN-UNF (Ultra-Nearfield) is an innovative, three-piece 3-way studio monitoring system engineered specifically for producers, engineers, and content creators working in restricted, untreated environments. Optimized for a fixed listening distance of exactly 0.8 meters (approximately an arm's length), the system delivers the precise imaging and flat frequency response of professional studio environments directly to a standard desktop setup. By utilizing a unique architecture that separates low-frequency reproduction from mid- and high-frequency acoustic centers, it addresses the acoustic anomalies, desk reflections, and mechanical vibrations that typically plague small mixing spaces.
\n\n\n\nPhysical Architecture and Component Breakdown
\n\n\n\n1. The Central Bass Unit
\n\nThe heart of the system is a rectangular enclosure that contains the amplification, digital signal processing (DSP), input connectivity, and low-frequency drivers.
\n\n- \n
- Mechanical Design: It houses two 4.5-inch high-excursion woofers positioned in a horizontally-opposed configuration. Because the drivers push in exact opposition to one another, their physical kinetic forces cancel out. This mechanical mitigation ensures that zero mechanical vibration transfers to the desktop surface, preventing muddy low-end resonances and keeping surrounding gear stable. \n
- Placement Versatility: The bass unit is designed to integrate seamlessly into crowded workspaces. It can lay completely flat on a desk to serve as a sturdy riser for an external computer monitor, or it can be propped up vertically to slide neatly behind a laptop screen or compact display. \n \n
2. The Spherical Satellites
\n\nMid- and high-frequency reproduction is handled by two independent, eyeball-shaped satellite speakers.
\n\n- \n
- Coaxial Driver Alignment: Each satellite utilizes a 4-inch mid-range driver with a 1-inch textile dome tweeter nestled exactly at its acoustic center. This coaxial architecture ensures that mid and high frequencies originate from the exact same point in space, completely eliminating time-alignment errors and phase cancellations. The result is an incredibly wide sweet spot and hyper-accurate stereo imaging. \n
- Silicone Positioning Cradles: The satellites rest in molded silicone rings rather than rigid mounts. This decoupled design allows the user to freely pivot, tilt, and aim the spheres in any direction, ensuring the drivers point directly at the listener's ears regardless of how the central bass unit is oriented. \n \n
Electro-Acoustic Performance and Specifications
\n\nThe IN-UNF behaves acoustically as a full-range, three-way monitoring solution by strictly dividing the frequency spectrum between its specialized drivers:
\n\n- \n
- Power Delivery: The system is powered by a robust 320-watt Class D amplifier module housed inside the bass station, distributing clean headroom across all components. \n
- Frequency Coverage: The total frequency response spans from 39 Hz up to 25 kHz (-10 dB). The central bass unit handles everything from 39 Hz up to a crossover point of 280 Hz, taking the heavy lifting of low-end bass reproduction away from the desktop level. The coaxial satellites handle everything from 280 Hz up to 25 kHz. \n
- Output Capabilities: The system achieves a maximum continuous output of 103 dB SPL, providing plenty of clean, distortion-free volume for close-range monitoring. \n \n
Input Connectivity and Digital Integration
\n\nEquipped with an internal high-resolution Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), the IN-UNF acts as its own audio interface, allowing users to bypass external hardware if necessary. The rear panel provides a versatile array of connection options:
\n\n- \n
- USB-C Input: Provides a direct, plug-and-play digital connection for laptops, computers, and tablets, supporting studio-quality audio resolution up to 24-bit/48kHz. \n
- Balanced 1/4-inch TRS: Standard analog inputs allow seamless integration with traditional professional audio interfaces, mixers, or monitor controllers. \n
- Optical (TOSLINK): A digital connection path optimized for integration with gaming consoles, televisions, or media players. \n
- 3.5mm Stereo Aux: A front- or side-accessible analog jack intended for fast, zero-friction connections with smartphones, portable media players, or laptops. \n \n
Boundary Compensation and Room Tuning
\n\nTo counter the predictable acoustic build-up caused by placing speakers on flat surfaces and near solid boundaries, Kali Audio integrated an advanced DSP tuning matrix into the bass unit. A bank of physical DIP switches allows users to instantly recalibrate the speaker’s internal equalizer based on its exact position in the room.
\n\nPreset configurations compensate for specific environmental variables, including:
\n\n- \n
- Placing the system flat on a standard desk vs. standing vertically. \n
- Desks positioned out in the open room vs. desks pushed flat against a wall. \n
- Setups wedged tightly into room corners, which naturally exaggerate lower frequencies. \n
- Desks featuring acoustic treatment behind them vs. bare, reflective drywall. \n \n
